Tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. My family is from Malaysia, I went to a German school, and I went to the Boston Conservatory in the US for Dance… So I feel like a blend of cultures.
I grew up active. After school I always had some combination of Ballet, Chinese Dance, Contemporary Dance, Track and Field, or Swim training. Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours to become competent in one domain - I clocked my 10,000 hours of physical movement early on in life, so my path to a career in fitness just made sense. I also know pain and injury well… And I use all my experiences to become a safe teacher.
What is your favorite way of exercising/movement and why?
Currently, I love olympic weightlifting. I love it because the dynamic lifts have eluded me. Heavy squats and deadlifts have never been a problem for me, but the Snatch, Clean and Jerk, have always been technically challenging, and I like the coordination challenge. I am also a big people person, so the support of my weightlifting community here in Hong Kong helps keep me going.
You will be teaching quite a range of classes from Yoga to Circuit. What can your students expect from these classes?
Yes! I love teaching different kinds of classes because the body and mind need different things from day to day. I am a huge nerd - expect dialogue around Anatomy and Biomechanics simmered into all my classes!
How do you motivate yourself on days when you don't feel like practicing or training?
I get on the mega and trust whomever is leading the class at HKore. :) That is the beauty of the 45-minute class.
WHAT SORT OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO? WHAT 3 SONGS ARE ON REPEAT?
I love rap. I don’t play it in class because I know it is an acquired taste, and also because people are always surprised when they find out what I am listening to.
Lose Yourself - Eminem
Driving Miss Daisy - Logic and Childish Gambino
High Road - Fort Minor and John Legend
FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN YOUR DOWNTIME?
Walk my dogs! They are the remnant of my teenage years and have supported me tons. I am so lucky to have them.
